We sat down with Alexandru Roman, a current Master’s student in the Globalization program at McMaster University, to learn more about their research, why they chose the program, and how the flexibility and interdisciplinary nature of the Institute has shaped their academic journey.
What led you to decide to continue your education with a Master’s in Globalization? What is your ideal future path with this degree?
“I decided to pursue my M.A. in Globalization Studies because it gave me the opportunity to research a complex global topic, which I found to be fascinating. Additionally, it also paved the way for many professional advancements either within academia if I choose, or within the public sector.”
Can you give a brief introduction to your research for your Major Research Paper?
“My MRP research is focused on how artificial intelligence and private technology companies are redefining the nature of the Military Industrial Complex (MIC), and I am using the war between Ukraine and Russia as a case study for understanding this.”
What is one aspect about the Globalization master’s program that you love?
“I have to say that without a doubt, the best thing about the Globalization program is that it’s extremely interdisciplinary. With regards to the MRP, you are given a lot of freedom to choose any topic you are interested in, as long as you can make the case that it’s a global issue.”
What would you like to say to prospective students thinking of a Globalization minor or master’s?
“I would say that you have nothing to lose by pursuing this discipline. Think of a global issue that you are passionate about and go for it. Additionally, make sure to make as many connections as possible!”
